Some thoughts on snow activities + weekly snippets #2

Quote taken from The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry; photo from yesterday.

It's been quite a winter wonderland here for the past few days! With everything being covered in snow and all, just like in Dean Martin's song! Now, about the quote. I live in the suburbs (or rather, the countryside) so there is A LOT of places where you can go tobogganing / do silly things in the snow. And when I was little, the hills around our village were always full of children. We'd go there right after lunch and stay until it got dark. We were wet and cold but nothing could take us away from the beautiful white fields.

That said, it makes me so sad to see all these places almost empty now. I mean where are all the children? I know for a fact that there are a lot of young families around here, so what are all these kids doing? Yesterday I met two boys and their father while I was on a walk; they were skiing. And I asked the father, where all the other kids were. "Probably playing games on their computer or wathing TV," he said.

So seriously parents, if you're reading this, go out with your kids, teach them how to make a snowman, toboggan with them all afternoon! You'll appreciate the memories.
And keep the child within you alive**! ;-)

Some links for your Sunday evening:

This article about what your desk tells about you (I'd rather not tell what I am according to this article...).

This song, because I listened to it when I was 16 and discovered it again only recently. And it's still good!

This illustration, because I'm in love with the author's concept of "illustrated quotations" that celebrate great ideas, great thinkers and great language.

This campaign by UNEP and FAO. One third of all food production world-wide gets lost or wasted in the food production and consumption systems, which I'm sure you're aware of. But it's now up to you to get informed and take action.

This website, because you can take up courses from world's top universities for free. I'm still deciding between five of them, because they're all soooo cool.

Have a great start of the week!

**My inner child was especially happy today, because I went tobogganing. And there were some kids too, giving me the "aren't-you-too-old-for-this" look. As it turns out, I am a bit old for this, because after going back up the hill for the 7th time, I was barely catching my breath. But I'm not giving in, see you soon mr. Hill. ;-)

  3. I am so excited that I stumbled upon your blog! I used to be an international relations major (until I became an event management major) so I am excited whenever I come across another!

And I completely agree - parents these days seem to think it's safer to just keep their kids inside. But it definitely doesn't do the kids a whole lot of good when they become shut ins!
